WHY GTA V WAS THE BEST-SELLING GAME OF THE 2010 DECADE

My name is Marc Doctor and I have been researching the sandbox field, analysing
releases since the mid 80’s. From The Legend of Zelda (1986), through the 90’s Fallout
saga (the most recent being Fallout 3, 2008) to the rise of the Far Cry series in the midlate 2000s.
What do the games cited above have in common? To begin with, they caused a
massive impact on the genre and pushed the whole game industry forward in terms of
specs, player freedom and interaction with the environment.
If one analyses the most popular sandbox releases throughout the videogame history,
there is one key piece of data that stands out: these games are always released within
a surprisingly accurate time span of 5 years.
What does this have to do with GTA V? Exactly, if you look carefully GTA V was
scheduled for a release in 2013, five years after two giants: Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3.
This time lapse can be concluded to be the optimal in the game industry for new
technologies to develop and have a quick impact in the videogame landscape.
That is to say, GTA V displayed technology far beyond its predecessors’ capabilities
due to the fact that GTA V had time to polish its already outstanding RAGE game
engine.
As a final addendum, another videogame-colossus, Far Cry 3, had just been released
many months prior to the GTA counterpart, leaving the latter game free way to receive
all the attention in the first quarter of the 2013 videogame calendar.
